新年(n) - しんねん - shinnen – New year.
Sample sentence:
Kanji | 新年明けましておめでとうございます! |
Kana | しんねん あけまして おめでとう ございます |
Romaji | Shinnen akemashite omedetou gozaimasu. |
Malayalam | പുതുവത്സരാശംസകള്. |
English | Wish you a happy new year. |
Note: The above said expression can be used only after the start of a New Year i.e. from Jan 1 onwards.
Before that, another expression “よい おとし を おむかえ ください(yoi otoshi o omukae kudasai)” is there to wish Happy new year.
Literal meaning of these expressions is as follows:
(Jan 1st onwards) Shinnen akemashite omedetou gozaimasu – Congratulations as a new year begins.
(On or before Dec 31st) Yoi otoshi o omukae kudasai – Let us welcome a happy new year.
Instead of using these long expressions you can simply say, あけまして おめでとう ございます(akemashite omedetou gozaimasu)
Or よいおとしを(yoi otoshi o).
